Naturally, as we made vast improvements in the hardware for Argos, the vision systems were also improved.

Obstacle Detection
In light of its exemplary performance last year, there were no significant modifications made to the obstacle detection algorithm; only a few changes to enable the use of the newly acquired Videre Stereo-on-Chip camera.

Lane Detection
Lane detection, however, received a massive overhaul. The filter and fusion steps were changed greatly since the last competition. New white and yellow filters were developed that are more resiliant under a wide variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, a neural network replaced the earlier fusion technique utilizing the ‘binary and’ operator. After training it with 10,000 iterations, it produced over 30% improvement in lane detection under low light conditions
