New PAVE sign on display in the E-Quad
Check out the new team photo that has been put up in the C wing of the E-Quad. We look great! Thanks to Frank Wojciechowski for taking the photo, and to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences for featuring the display.
Upcoming Events
We are keeping ourselves quite busy trying to get the robots up and running for the events coming up next month. More information is available on our events page.
March 30: Engineering Open House
P12 will be on display in front of the Friend Center for upcoming engineering students to view.
April 2: Hitting the Big Screen
The PAVE garage and our robots will be filmed as part of video for the upcoming dedication of the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education.
April 4: High School Colloquium
We will be presenting at the Society of Women’s Engineering (SWE) upcoming colloquium, to encourage high school students, especially women, to enter fields of engineering. Our robots will also be on display.
April 17/24: Princeton Preview
We welcome prospective Princeton undergraduate students by displaying our robots and giving tours of our garage. We hope to recruit the incoming student to Princeton Engineering and especially into PAVE
April 24 (1:45 – 3:30): Local Middle School Visit
We will be visiting Mrs. Weinberger’s robotics class at Montgomery Middle school. While there, we will be displaying P12, as part of the middle school students’ unit on the DARPA Grand Challenges. We will also have Arogs displaying its GPS waypoint-following abilities on a course created by the students.
New Website Layout
For the past week or so, we’ve been working on a new layout for our homepage. Hope you enjoy it! The new layout accompanies our transition to Web 2.0 -you can now follow our incremental progress updates through Twitter, view photos from projects and events on our flickr page, see videos on our YouTube channel, and become a fan on facebook.
We have many exciting events coming up over the next couple of months and a lot of progress to make on our projects. Be sure to check back often for progress updates, photos and more!
PAVE Presents at SPIE/IS&T Electronic Imaging Conference

Several PAVE students were invited to present their paper, Kratos: Princeton University’s Entry in the 2008 Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition at the 2009 SPIE/IS&T Electronic Imaging Conference on Tuesday, January 20th. The conference, which was held in San Jose, CA from January 18-22, brought together professional and academics in a variety of fields relating to computers, digital imaging and their applications.
PAVE seniors Chris Baldassano, Gordon Franken and Jonathan Mayer presented the paper as part of the Intelligent Robots and Computer Vision sub-conference. The submitted paper was a revised version of the technical paper for which PAVE’s 2008 IGVC team won a first place design award. The work was co-authored by Andrew Saxe ’08 and Derrick Yu ’10, and advised by Professor Robert Schapire of the Computer Science Department.
Media Coverage
In response to the recent announcement that PAVE has been selected as one of 53 teams to qualify for a site-visit evaluation by DARPA officials, we have received additional publicity. Be sure to check out the articles in this latest round of press coverage, including the Princeton homepage and Kevin Coughlin’s continuing coverage in The Newark Star-Ledger.
When the date for our site visit is confirmed, will will post it. Please contact us if you would be interested in attending.
In addition, we are still searching for a name for our competition vehicle. If you have any suggestions, or would be interested in sponsoring the naming of our vehicle, please let us know.
Ongoing Developments

On Friday March 30, PAVE hosted a study break with the Princeton Student Chapter of IEEE outside of our garage. We demonstrated our “drive-by-gamepad” system to a crowd of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff.
We are also excited about the two recent publications on our team. We are proud to announce our first international coverage by LUSA, a Portuguese news syndicate. In addition, we were featured locally in The Princeton Packet.
For the past few weeks we have been preparing for our video submission to DARPA. We have been doing extensive testing and filming at Princeton’s Forrestal campus.

PAVE in the News
Our recent Dedication Ceremony garnered quite a bit of press attention. We were covered in articles in The Trenton Times and The Newark Star-Ledger. In addition, we were featured in a broadcast of the NJN Nightly News.
Over the past few weeks we have been making excellent progress and we are beginning the hardware and software integration process that will allow our vehicle to perform all of the autonomous capabilities required for the April 13 Video Submission deadline.
We will be holding a demonstration of our autonomous systems on Friday, March 23. This event will be held at our testing facilities on the Forrestal Campus Annex of Princeton University. This event is open to the public, and we invite anyone who is interested to stop by. The invitation to this event can be found here.
